After UPI fraud, notify your bank immediately, report it by calling 1930, and complete a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Reporting quickly may improve the chance of stopping the money from being transferred further, but recovery is not guaranteed.

First, determine whether you made the payment yourself after being deceived or whether it was made without your authorisation. The bank’s investigation and the customer’s responsibility may differ in these two situations. Receiving a cyber complaint number alone does not prove that an FIR has been registered or that the money will be returned. Even if the money has been put on hold in the fraudster’s account, an investigation and the process before the competent authority may still be required for payment to the victim.

What should you do now?

  1. Report the payment to your bank using its official number, obtain a complaint reference number, and have the payment facility disabled if necessary.
  2. File a cyber complaint with the UTR, time, amount, recipient’s UPI ID, and relevant communications.
  3. Check the status of the complaint and obtain written information from the investigating officer about the process for holding and recovering the money.

Which documents should you keep?

Bank statements, UTR, payment screenshots, messages, phone numbers, and the complaint acknowledgement.

Avoid this mistake

Do not trust anyone who asks for an advance fee, a new OTP, or screen sharing in the name of helping you recover your money.

A hypothetical example

Suppose ₹18,000 was sent on the pretext of arranging a job. Instead of writing only “I was cheated” in the complaint, provide the UTR and time for each transaction, along with a record of the promise on which the payment was made. This makes it easier to identify the money.

Will the entire amount be returned as soon as you call 1930?

No. The outcome depends on whether the money is available, whether it can be identified, and the investigation process.
