Raise a dispute about an incorrect entry with both the credit information company and the lender that reported it. Paying an agent who merely promises to improve your score will not correct the underlying record.
First determine whether the entry is an error, a case of identity misuse or an actual overdue amount. Under the applicable RBI compensation framework, eligible cases may qualify for compensation of ₹100 per calendar day if the complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days. The framework has conditions and exclusions; compensation is not available for every low score.
What should you do now?
- Obtain your full report and identify the account number, lender and error.
- Submit a written dispute with proof of closure or evidence of an identity mismatch.
- After the correction, check the updated report and whether you are eligible for compensation for the delay.
Which documents should you keep?
Your credit report, no-dues certificate, statements, complaint dates and replies.
Avoid this mistake
A correct negative history does not become removable merely because you dislike it.
A hypothetical example
The loan has been closed, but the report still shows it as overdue. Send the closure letter and final payment statement to the lender and credit bureau. After the correction, check the updated report—not just the message confirming that the complaint has been closed.
Will making a complaint change your score immediately?
No. The update takes place after the verification and corrected-reporting process.
